The tournament’s venues had smaller pitch sizes, with most of those used for American football measuring 110 yards (100 m) by 70 yards (64 m), compared to FIFA’s standard of 115 yards (105 m) by 74 yards (68 m). This affected the dynamics of the game, making the contests even closer. In addition, the grass, grown in specially select nurseries, was attach to layers of plastic that were glue to the field surface. According to a statement released by CONMEBOL, it was transporte by truck and was designe with great attention to detail. Considering factors such as water, sunlight and the trucks’ delivery routes.
Frederico Nantes, Conmebol’s competitions director, said that the size and capacity of soccer-specific MLS venues. It influenced the decision to prohibit their use during the tournament. Factors such as the size of the venue, travel distances between cities, and infrastructure were carefully evaluate before Conmebol conclude. The use of artificial turf was inevitable, despite players’ concerns about that playing surface. After the tournament’s opening match between Argentina versus Canada at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni and first-choice goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez called the newly installed grass surface a “disaster” in post-game interviews.
Injury Speculations
Following Peruvian player Luis Advincula’s Achilles injury during his side’s match against Chile. Peru head coach Jorge Fossati cited AT&T Stadium’s unsatisfactory turf as the likely cause of his injury: “It happened all of a sudden. I realize it’s grass today, but it’s not normal grass. This grass doesn’t grow and isn’t produce. It’s grass they bring from somewhere else. It can be a bit of a hard surface and it can affect you on the spot.” Vinicius Jr., Kamal Miller, James Rodriguez and Chile coach Ricardo Gareca were among other notable individuals who expressed their concerns about the turf conditions.
“We started the project in June, when we were traveling to analyze the grounds and watch games. Here, and in November, we started inspections in all the stadiums and all the training centers,” said CONMEBOL agricultural engineer Maristela Kuhn. “Reports were prepare with recommendations on what need to be done. We held meetings with agronomists and programming. With a special technique, we defoliated all the grass plantations.”
High ticket prices
There were concerns about overprice tickets, with many fans feeling the cost was too high compare to previous tournaments. Two days after the match, Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa said in a press conference interview. “You know whose responsibility it is to protect the fans in the stands. You have to ask me if the players have received an apology from those responsible for safeguarding the security. The players reacted the same way any human being would! If they saw that there was no way to escape or prevent it and that they were attacking their wife, mother or child.”
The Uruguayan players’ involvement with Colombian fans was support by others, most notably members of the Argentine national team.
Colombian midfielder Juan Fernando Quintero also describe the incident as disturbing. Saying, “What happen is sad and people can’t be blame. We don’t want things like this to happen during football. Nobody wants violence. Aggressive people who don’t enjoy football shouldn’t be in the stadium.” Argentina’s celebration
